The embodied mind thesis is opposed to other theories of <\/span><\/em>cognition<\/span><\/em><\/a>, such as <\/span><\/em>cognitivism<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>computationalism<\/span><\/em><\/a> and <\/span><\/em>Cartesian dualism<\/span><\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n

The idea has roots in <\/span><\/em><\/div>\n

Kant<\/span><\/em><\/a> and <\/span><\/em>20th century continental philosophy<\/span><\/em><\/a> (such as <\/span><\/em>Merleau-Ponty<\/span><\/em><\/a>). The modern version depends on insights drawn from recent research in <\/span><\/em>linguistics<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>cognitive science<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>artificial intelligence<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>robotics<\/span><\/em><\/a> and <\/span><\/em>neurobiology<\/span><\/em><\/a>. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

George Lakoff<\/span><\/em><\/a> (a <\/span><\/em>cognitive scientist<\/span><\/em><\/a> and <\/span><\/em>linguist<\/span><\/em><\/a>) and his collaborators (including <\/span><\/em>Mark Johnson<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>Mark Turner<\/span><\/em><\/a>, and <\/span><\/em>Rafael E. N\u00fa\u00f1ez<\/span><\/em><\/a>) have written a series of books promoting and expanding the thesis based on discoveries in <\/span><\/em>cognitive science<\/span><\/em><\/a>, such as <\/span><\/em>conceptual metaphor<\/span><\/em><\/a> and <\/span><\/em>image schema<\/span><\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/em>[1]<\/span><\/em><\/a>
Robotics<\/span><\/em><\/a> researchers such as <\/span><\/em>Rodney Brooks<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>Hans Moravec<\/span><\/em><\/a> and <\/span><\/em>Rolf Pfeifer<\/span><\/em><\/a> have argued that true <\/span><\/em>artificial intelligence<\/span><\/em><\/a> can only be achieved by machines that have <\/span><\/em>sensory<\/span><\/em><\/a> and <\/span><\/em>motor skills<\/span><\/em><\/a> and are connected to the world through a body.<\/span><\/em>[2]<\/span><\/em><\/a> The insights of these robotics researchers have in turn inspired philosophers like <\/span><\/em>Andy Clark<\/span><\/em><\/a> and <\/span><\/em>Horst Hendriks-Jansen<\/span><\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/em>[3]<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/div>\n

Neuroscientists<\/span><\/em><\/a> <\/span><\/em>Gerald Edelman<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>Ant\u00f3nio Dam\u00e1sio<\/span><\/em><\/a> and others have outlined the connection between the body, individual structures in the brain and aspects of the mind such as <\/span><\/em>consciousness<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>emotion<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>self-awareness<\/span><\/em><\/a> and <\/span><\/em>will<\/span><\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/em>[4]<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/div>\n

Biology<\/span><\/em><\/a> has also inspired <\/span><\/em>Gregory Bateson<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>Humberto Maturana<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>Francisco Varela<\/span><\/em><\/a>, <\/span><\/em>Eleanor Rosch<\/span><\/em><\/a> and <\/span><\/em>Evan Thompson<\/span><\/em><\/a> to develop a closely related version of the idea, which they call <\/span><\/em>enactivism<\/span><\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/em>[5]<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/div>\n
