{"id":2499,"date":"2012-01-17T10:03:48","date_gmt":"2012-01-17T09:03:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/integrationtraining.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2499"},"modified":"2020-03-24T16:53:18","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T16:53:18","slug":"business-meditation-resources-mindfulness-at-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.integrationtraining.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/01\/business-meditation-resources-mindfulness-at-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Business Meditation Resources &#8211; Mindfulness at Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p>Mindfulness (bringing non-judgemental awareness to the present moment) is both an ancient practice and a fast growing field, and meditation is of great use to business<a href=\"http:\/\/integrationtraining.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Meditation-by-sea.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Meditation by sea\" src=\"http:\/\/integrationtraining.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Meditation-by-sea.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"247\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a>and in the modern workplace. \u201c<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.integrationtraining.co.uk\/business_mindfulness_training.html\">Business meditation<\/a><\/strong>\u201d has been part of Integration Training\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.integrationtraining.co.uk\/stress_management_training.html\">stress management<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.integrationtraining.co.uk\/embodiedmanagementtraining.html\">leadership<\/a> workshops for some years. While once it was greeted with some fear and scepticism it seems business is following the lead of healthcare and embracing what has been scientifically proven to be a tremendously useful set of skills. I have found mindfulness will be easily accepted by large and mainstream businesses across Europe so long as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The benefits of business meditation are clear &#8211; e.g. improved efficiency, health and productivity, and reduced stress, conflict and staff turnover<\/li>\n<li>The evidence-base showing the benefits of mindfulness is presented logically and rigorously<\/li>\n<li>Mindfulness \/ meditation is presented in appropriate language (e.g. using the analogies of \u201cdefragmenting a hard-drive\u201d, \u201cblue sky mind\u201d, doing an internal \u201caudit\u201d or \u201coptimising personal operating systems\u201d. Or even better using their language and metaphors.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Along with my colleague Chris Hoyle I recently lead a session on Mindfulness for Unilever in Switzerland and this blog is a collection of some of the resources I gathered for them. I imagine it will be helpful for anyone presenting mindfulness and mediation to business or in other organisation settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple Corporate Meditation \/ Mindfulness Practices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of the mindfulness practices taught within a Buddhist monastery are totally appropriate for the modern workplace, many need some adaptation and there are a few totally new ones I use<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mindfulness of breathing for the workplace<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This classic is a good \u201cbase\u201d for any mindfulness course. I usually ask people to \u201csit upright yet relaxed\u201d (in chairs) and bring awareness to their breath (perhaps after a short body-scan. I add \u201cIf you have thoughts that&#8217;s OK, \u00a0just notice them and let them come and go.\u201d The last part is important as people often have the misunderstanding that meditation requires a \u201cblank\u201d mind. I get people in the habit of doing this in normal office environments.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Zz-Lfpcefu4\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Sensory work awareness<a href=\"http:\/\/integrationtraining.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Drinking-coffee.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2520\" title=\"Drinking coffee\" src=\"http:\/\/integrationtraining.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Drinking-coffee.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"139\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Asking people to bring attention to things they do anyway at work is helpful. Activities include &#8211; drinking tea, eating, looking out of the window, opening doors, when the phone rings, etc.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Walking\/ stretching meditation<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Most business people leave their desks to walk to meetings and generally go about their business. This can be turned into a meditation by bringing awareness to the body. Office stretches that can be done in a chair can also be taught as a mindfulness exercise.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Centring<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Centring is an emergency mindfulness and state management practice that many of the business people I have trained love. Some do it at the start of meetings, feedback sessions or sales pitches as standard practice now.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mindfulness for creativity and innovation<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many businesses find mindfulness before brain-storming or other creativity and innovation exercises useful.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Technology awareness<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I am pioneering mindful use of technology, such as while e-mailing on a lap-top or texting on a smart-phone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Business Mindfulness and Meditation Research and Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mindfulness Definitions<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cBringing one\u2019s complete attention to the present experience on a moment-to-moment basis.\u201d\u00a0<em>(Marlatt &amp; Kris- teller, 1999)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u201cPaying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally\u201d\u00a0<em>(Kabat-Zinn, 1994)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Overview of Mindfulness and Business Research<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mindfulness makes people smarter, healthier, happier, kinder and more productive.<\/li>\n<li>Ashridge Business College, Fast Company and Harvard Business Review find mindfulness useful for leadership, job satisfaction, resilience and stress management.<\/li>\n<li>Shown to raise emotional intelligence &#8211; Stress and Health Journal<\/li>\n<li>Meditators shown to make more rational economic decisions &#8211; Virginia Tech<\/li>\n<li>Shown to reduce stress and increase performance in US military, Olympic athletes and other stressful occupations &#8211; University of Pennsylvania<\/li>\n<li>UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence approves mindfulness for use with anxiety, depression and stress on the National Health Service after empirical overviews<\/li>\n<li>Mindfulness develops greater corporate social responsibility &#8211; INSEAD Business School<\/li>\n<li>Mindfulness makes knowledge workers more productive and improves self-management &#8211; Drucker School of Management<\/li>\n<li>General Mills, United Online, Google and others large companies credit mindfulness\u00a0training with leadership success<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mindfulnet.org\/page4.htm\">Mindfulnet.org<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\" http:\/\/www.mindfulness-works.com\/resources1.php\">Mindfulness Works<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Four Mindfulness Studies Relevant to Business as Examples<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A study looked at how four days of training for just 20 minutes per day<strong> could help on a battery of cognitive tests<\/strong>. \u00a0They found that the mindfulness practitioners performed particularly well on tasks with time constraints, suggesting that mindfulness could be useful for any of us who have to work to deadlines\u00a0&#8211;<em>Zeidan, F., Johnson, S. K., Diamond, B. J., David, Z., &amp; Goolkasian, P. (2010). Mindfulness meditation improves cognition: Evidence of brief mental training. Consciousness and Cognition, 19(2), 597-605<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Mindfulness training increases brain grey matter\u00a0concentration &#8211; This study suggests that participation in an eight week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programme is associated with changes in gray matter concentration in brain regions involved in learning and memory processes, emotion regulation, self-referential processing, and perspective taking.<\/em><br \/>\n&#8211; Psychiatry Research Journal, Hozel et al, 2010<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Mindful leadership research<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe practice of meditation in the business world is increasingly moving from the fringe to the mainstream, and already features as a key part of a number of international management and organisation development programmes. Report on a meditation research study conducted at\u00a0 Ashridge: Findings suggest a significantly upwards shift in general levels of satisfaction for individuals who commit to a period of mindfulness. This is a promising finding in relation to an\u00a0exploration of the beneficial impact of meditation for the workplace. 90%\u00a0 of Group 1\u00a0 (participants practicing mindfulness) noted benefits from having participated in the mindfulness\u00a0 activities. 61% noted &#8216;feeling of calm&#8217;, 30% listed &#8216;enjoyed leaving everything and having time to\u00a0 themselves&#8217;. 22% of the items listed related to improved sleep, and 22% also cited &#8216;having a different perspective&#8217;. Their study provides early indications to support existing work in this field, which incorporates mindfulness and meditation in leadership development and sustainability.\u00a0&#8211; <em>The Ashridge Journal: Mindful leadership: Exploring the value of a meditation practice;
