These can be acute such as increased heart rate or more long-term like weight gained through comfort eating. I will focus on the chronic symptoms here as these are the less readily recognised. It is essential for leaders and managers to be able to spot stress-related\u00a0burnouts\u00a0approaching to look after themselves and their teams.<a href=\"http:\/\/integrationtraining.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Stress-symptoms.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-778\" title=\"Stress-symptoms\" src=\"http:\/\/integrationtraining.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Stress-symptoms.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stress symptoms to look out for to avoid burnout <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Physiological\u00a0Chronic Stress Symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stress is a bodily phonomena and causes biochemical changes internally and physical symptoms\u00a0externally.\u00a0General ill health caused by a\u00a0weakened\u00a0immune system is a common stress symptom. Different people have different &#8220;organs of weakness&#8221; and when stressed get such things as cold sores, diarrhoea, muscular aches,\u00a0coughs and colds, and skin rashes for example. Stress can\u00a0also\u00a0be seen in the posture &#8211; either\u00a0collapsed\u00a0or chronically tense and contracted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Behavioural <strong>Signs of <\/strong>Stress<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disturbance to sleep (not sleeping or sleeping ots can both be signs of stress)<\/li>\n<li>Changes\u00a0in diet (e.g. comfort eating or reduced appetite)<\/li>\n<li>Excessive\u00a0use of alcohol, drugs (including\u00a0caffeine\u00a0and nicotine) and other addictive coping strategies (even exercise)<\/li>\n<li>Aggressive\u00a0behaviour or socially withdrawn behaviour (it&#8217;s the change to look-out for<\/li>\n<li>Nervous\u00a0habits\u00a0(pacing nail biting,\u00a0compulsive\u00a0e-nail checking even!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Psychological Stress Symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduced concentration (may show up behaviourally as increased &#8220;error rate&#8221; at work)<\/li>\n<li>Emotional\u00a0distress<\/li>\n<li>Memory problems<\/li>\n<li>Anxious or racing thoughts<\/li>\n<li>Agitation and an inability to relax<\/li>\n<li>Feeling overwhelmed<\/li>\n<li>Reduced energy or energy fluctuations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Organisational Symptoms of Stress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Note that whole organisations can have cultures of stress and show any of the above\u00a0<em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">symptoms<\/span> en\u00a0masse<\/em>. Excessive drinking may be normalised in a company for example.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stress Response Overview<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Psychologist Connie Lillas uses a driving analogy to describe the three most  common ways people respond when they\u2019re overwhelmed by stress:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Foot on the gas<\/strong> \u2013 Fight\/Hyper-arousal. An angry or agitated stress response.  You\u2019re heated, keyed up, overly emotional, and unable to sit still.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Foot on the brake<\/strong> \u2013 Flight\/ Hyp0-arousal.\u00a0A withdrawn or depressed stress  response. You shut down, space out, and show very little energy or emotion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Foot on both<\/strong> \u2013 Freeze\/A tense and frozen stress response. You  \u201cfreeze\u201d under pressure and can\u2019t do anything.
